Six Stages of Doodle (and the music that helps)

Someone asked me this following question on my facebook page for The Doodologist:

What kind of music helps you create? asked by Heather Weaver

Without music, there would be no doodles, as I need constant background noise, so here are the Six Stages of Doodle’s musical listening:

The Lincoln Imp

Stage 1: Research time, looking at the ideas and photographs that have been sent to me. So I usually will just have last.fm or something like Houndstooth Radio playing in the background, nothing specific.

Stage 2: Sketching and Composition: Making the ideas work in an aesthetically pleasing manner. This requires concentration, so usually in the folk rock genre, but more on the slowcoustic side. Current faves are Small Sur.

Stage 3: Putting final sketch on paper ready to paint: This is a fun time, so lets go uptempo again and listen to some Indie Rock and maybe a little electronica.

Stage 4: Painting time!  At this stage music without words is best, so I now love listening to movie soundtracks, espeically Studio Ghibli/Anime ones.(thanks mainly to TJ Lubrano’s Illustrations for that tip!)

Stage 5: Tidying up: This requires focus, so it is either soundtrack time or an actual movie that I have seen lots before, like Willow.

Stage 6: Wrap it, Pack it and get ready to leg it to the Post Office time: This when the music goes into uptempo mode and it gets loud! Magnetic Man/Katy B, Prodigy, Faithless are all favourites.

Mostly Midwest Awesome session

Hezekiah Jones is releasing a new album “Have You Seen Our New Fort” set for release on March 29th. This video accompanies the song ” Lift the shadow from his heart”. I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of the album and it’s a mixed bag of fish, from the big sounds of the full band instrumentals to the quieter songs featuring the beautiful voice of Raphael Cutrufello.

I think this album is perfect for new and old fans of Hezekiah Jones, because new fans get to hear old material reworked, plus new material. Whilst old fans get to hear old favourites with a new twist, plus the new material. It’s win win all round.

Previous quirky, cool and slightly creepy video accompanying a Hezekiah Jones song is this one Cannonball, which also features in the new album.

Love this! Animation and a beautiful song; hat tipped in the direction of @YerbirdRecords

@7streets has turned me on… to Chromeo, it’s funktastic. Spotify users can catch the album ‘Business Casual’, well worth a listen.
